History

The station signed on the air around 1965 as WIVE. In 1970, an FM was signed on at 100.1 as WIVE-FM. During the 1970s, the stations broadcast a religious format and also operated a Christian Bookstore out of their studios on Ashcake Road in Hanover County.

In 1977, WIVE-AM changed to an adult contemporary format as WKDH, the calls meant to latch on to the popularity of local Hanover County theme park, Kings Dominion.

By 1981, the station abandoned the format and returned to religion as WIVE-AM on May 12. WIVE-FM was also sold off around this time and became WYFJ-FM, owned by Bible Broadcasting Network. WIVE-AM continued broadcasting alone from Ashcake Rd, while WYFJ-FM moved to a new facility on Washington Highway.

On October 1, 1987, the station changed its call sign to WMMM (these calls are now on an FM station in Madison, Wisconsin), broadcasting the "Stardust" Adult Standards format. On July 1, 1989, the calls were changed to WPES by new owner Calvary Pentecostal Campground and a religious format returned to the signal. The station calls were changed to WHAN-AM on August 28, 1998.

On May 26, 2011, WHAN signed on an FM Translator, W275BQ, at 102.9 FM at 250 watts from its Ashcake Road facilities. WHAN is now simulcasted on 1430 AM and 102.9 FM.
